Low-metallicity Blue Compact Dwarfs as Templates for Primordial Star Formation

چکیده

Understanding how galaxies formed their first stars is a vital cosmological question, but the study of high-redshift objects, caught in the act of forming their first stars, is difficult. Here we argue that two extremely low-metallicity Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCDs), I Zw 18 and SBS 0335-052, could be local templates for primordial star formation, since both lack evolved (> 1Gyr) stellar populations; but they form stars differently. The main body of I Zw18 (1/50Z⊙) comprises two star-forming complexes (SFCXs), in the NW and the SE, which are surrounded by a smooth red envelope. Our new deep near-infrared images combined with HST/WFPC2 BV I show that the red extended region is significantly contaminated by ionized gas emission (Hunt et al. 2002). Such emission reddens the observed colors, mimicking the effect of age. Indeed, an analysis of five colors (B−H , V −K, V −I, J −H , H −K) in terms of stellar populations, extinction, and gas, suggests that the oldest stars in the outskirts of I Zw18 (and in the detached C component) can be no older than 500Myr. Unlike I Zw 18, where there are no super-star clusters (SSCs), virtually all of the star formation in SBS 0335-052 (1/40Z⊙) occurs in them. The underlying extended envelope is dominated by ionized gas emission rather than old stars (Vanzi et al. 2000). There is also evidence (Thuan et al. 1999, Hunt et al. 2001) for AV = 15mag extinction, caused by 10 − 10 M⊙ of dust. Our Brα measurement suggests that more than 3/4 of the star formation in SBS 0335-052 is obscured by dust, not clearly visible even at 2μm. Taken together, these results suggest that I Zw 18 and SBS 0335-052 form stars in very different ways, in spite of their similar metallicity and lack of old stars. We propose that dust and SSCs are associated with an “active” mode of star formation, and the lack of them with a “passive” mode. Theoretical models

Luminous Blue Variable Stars In The Two Extremely Metal - Deficient Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies DDO 68 and PHL 293

We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of two luminous blue variable (LBV) stars in two extremely metal-deficient blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies, DDO 68 with 12+logO/H = 7.15 and PHL 293B with 12+logO/H = 7.72. These two BCDs are the lowest-metallicity galaxies where LBV stars have been detected, allowing to study the LBV phenomenon in the extremely low metallicity regime, and...

The optical-to-radio spectral energy distributions of low-metallicity blue compact dwarf galaxies

We present global spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from 0.3μm to 90 cm for a sample of seven low-metallicity blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs). In addition to data compiled from the literature, we report new SCUBA data for the galaxies in the sample, including the two most metal-poor star-forming galaxies known, I Zw18 and SBS 0335−052. The standard starburst templates, M82 and Arp 220, do...

Near - infrared properties of Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies : the link between solar and low metallicity ⋆

We have obtained near-infrared images and spectra of three blue compact dwarf galaxies of intermediate sub-solar metallicity Tol 35, Tol 3 and UM 462. This work is part of a larger project aimed to study the star formation and the stellar populations of low metallicity galaxies in the near-infrared. In this frame work galaxies of intermediate metallicity represent an important step in understan...

Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies with Spitzer: the Infrared/radio Properties

We study the correlation between the radio, mid-infrared, and far-infrared properties for a sample of 28 blue compact dwarf (BCD) and low-metallicity star-forming galaxies observed by Spitzer. We find that these sources extend the same far-infraredYtoYradio correlation typical of star-forming late-type galaxies to lower luminosities. In BCDs, the 24 m (or 22 m) mid-infraredYtoYradio correlation...

New infrared and millimeter observations from Keck, Palomar, ISO, and OVRO and archival data from the NRAO VLA and IRAS are presented for the low metallicity blue compact dwarf galaxy SBS 0335-052. Mid-infrared imaging shows this young star-forming system is compact (0. 31; 80 pc) at 12.5 μm. The large Brγ equivalent width (235 Å) measured from integral field spectroscopy is indicative of a ∼5 ...
